Main Street: Greeneville will be sponsoring “Halloween Happenings” on Thursday, October 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. in downtown Greeneville.  Most events are free, and the public is invited.  Main Street will be blocked off from midblock 200’s N Main Street to McKee Street; Summer Street will be closed Cutler Street to College Street and Depot Street will be closed from Irish to Academy Street shortly prior to the event and remain so until the event ends.

No Parking within Event Area

To provide a safer space there will be no on-street parking after 3:00pm within the event area which includes Main, Depot and Summer Streets. Please take caution when traveling within the downtown area.  Designated routes are always subject to change.

Merchants, professional offices, banks, churches, industries, and the county courthouse are prepared to treat youngsters with candy if children are under 13 years of age and are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Several groups and individuals come together to make this annual event exciting and fun for children. The Greeneville Police Department assists with extra personnel during Halloween Happenings to help ensure the safety of both children and adults.  Greeneville City Schools Central Office provides the space for the costume contest. EMS and the Fire Department are there to help keep us safe. Students from Greeneville High School and numerous volunteers help to direct folks to all the different venues.

Costume Contest Location

Greeneville City Schools Education Foundation will assist with the only event Costume Contest.  The location for the contest will be the parking lot of the City School System’s Central Office, the Kathryn Leonard Building at the corner of West Depot and South Irish Streets.  Registrations forms may be found and downloaded this year on Main Street’s website: www.mainstreetgreeneville.org.  When it’s possible please download and fill out the forms prior to the event so you won’t have to wait so long in line.  The contest will have children’s age categories of 0-3 years, 4-6 years, 7-9 years, 10-12 years and back this year the family category.  Prizes will be awarded to the winners in each category.  Adults, please provide a cell phone number so you may be reached should your child be a winner and need to report back to receive their prize.

Many to Give Candy

Businesses and organizations may hand out candy during the event. Most downtown businesses participate as do many from outside downtown.  We ask that anyone planning to hand out candy to contact Main Street Greeneville so they can be acknowledged, and their spot confirmed.  Any outside downtown group is asked to set up only in front of vacant business space unless the current business has given you the okay to do so.

The area for candy giving is a portion of North and South Main Streets, Depot Street, Summer Street from Main Street to the Towne Square Shopping center. Candy givers on Main and Depot Streets are asked to set up toward and in the street allowing the crowds to move smoothly through the area.

Hayrides

Town of Greeneville Public Works Department will once again provide hayrides.  The Loading Zone will be W Depot Street.  Have fun and enjoy the ride.

Street Size Chalk Board

A section of the 100 block of South Main Street near the pocket park will be blocked off for a giant chalkboard where everyone is invited to take a few minutes and show their creative side by drawing on the street.

Look for music and dancing in the streets.  The Greeneville Community Swing Band will be on South Main Street near the Capitol Theater. Other fun things to do or see may be added between press time and the event.  So come on downtown, Tuesday between 4:00 – 6:00pm and check it out.

It’s not too late for any business not located in the downtown area that would like to participate in handing out treats to contact the Main Street Office 639-7102 for your location along the route.  Main Street: Greeneville encourages the public to come to downtown Greeneville and enjoy the festivities.
