Andrew Johnson National Cemetery — Greeneville, TN

Greeneville TN: On Saturday, December 14, 2013 the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery will host the national Wreaths Across America program. The program will begin at 11:30 am. The mission of the Wreaths Across America program is to: “Remember-Honor- and Teach. Remember the fallen; Honor those who serve; Teach our children the value of freedom. Parking for the event will be at Hal Henard Elementary School on Vann Road, with shuttle bus service provided. Superintendent Watts asks that you to take a moment of time during this busy holiday season to reflect and join in as we honor and recognize the sacrifices of our veterans who served before and of those who are today, still continuing the fight in the longest war of our nations’ history.

The local event will be one of hundreds of Wreaths Across America ceremonies taking place on Saturday throughout the United States. Greene County veteran’s organizations, Greeneville and Greene County Air Force JROTC, Greene County Honor Guard, Wal-Mart and the Greeneville VFW Ladies Auxiliary 1990 are co-hosts of the event.

This year over 1700 wreaths will be placed on every grave within the national cemetery. The wreaths will be placed on the graves prior to the program by the counties veteran organizations and the Junior ROTC cadets from both the Greeneville and Greene County school systems.

During Saturday’s event seven ceremonial wreaths that represent each branch of the military and a POW/MIA wreath will be placed around the flag pole a top Monument Hill. They will be carried through a saber arch salute provided by the Air Force JROTC cadets. A moment of silence will follow, and then taps will be played. The keynote address will be given by a retired veteran Stephanie Bowers and the music will be by Cicely Babb.

The public is invited to attend. General parking will be at Hal Henard Elementary School with free shuttle bus transportation provided. Limited handicap parking will be allowed along Monument Avenue. The Greeneville Police Department will close Monument Avenue to thru traffic at 9:30am and reopen the street at 2:00 pm. For more information contact Superintendent Lizzie Watts at 423-639-3711.
