Local Group To Assist Furloughed Federal Workers

The furlough of federal government workers impacts Greene County residents, and a small group of local citizens are taking action to provide some assistance to those federal employees impacted by the partial government shutdown.

Kind Hearts Greeneville is an ad hoc committee of local residents who are taking donations in order to provide gift cards good at local grocery stores. “We were struck by how some local federal workers are suddenly without an income. While they should receive back pay once the government reopens, they have to feed their families right now,” cited co-organizer Trudy Wallack. “We are hearing how one furloughed worker is rationing needed medicine and others are having to choose between prescriptions and food. Insurance companies restart the clock on drug plan deductibles every January first, so things that might be covered later in the year are immediate expenses for our neighbors who are furloughed from the government.”

Committee member Dan Spice explains: “Helping with food costs is one way of providing basic needs and easing the tough choices on what these workers can afford. We chose the name Kind Hearts Greeneville to reflect caring for our neighbors during this unusual time. We know from the initial response that Greeneville and Greene County has lots of kind hearts that want a way to help.”

Co-organizer Ella Price is quick to point out that Kind Hearts Greeneville is not about politics. “We don’t want people going hungry, and federal employees fall right through the normal safety nets in this situation.”

The program is very simple: Checks or cash may be dropped off at any Heritage Bank branch. Checks should be made payable to Kind Hearts Greeneville. Checks may be mailed to Heritage Bank, PO Box 428, Greeneville, TN 37744.

Kind Hearts Greeneville also accepts cash donations in jars at Catalyst Coffee, Creamy Cup, and at the Top Dog Hot Dog Stand. The group will quickly provide the gift cards to people showing their federal work ID or badge for those impacted by the partial government shutdown. Announcements for distribution times and places will be made very shortly. One hundred percent of monies collected will go to this local effort.
