COVID-19 Dictates Christmas in Downtown – A Holiday Celebration Event

After consulting with partners, merchants, local governments, and volunteers, Main Street: Greeneville, coordinating partner of Christmas in Downtown – A Holiday Celebration, announces that the difficult decision was made to cancel this year’s in-person festivities scheduled for Friday, December 4, 2020. We know how much the tree lightings downtown and at Town Hall along with gathering at the Greene County Courthouse for singing, caroling, celebration candles, arrival of and pictures with Santa, hay wagons, cookies decorating, making magic reindeer food, movies, and children’s activities, etc. things that make the season merry and bright mean to this community, it is evident in the crowd sizes and the look of joy on every face. However, in light of the growing number of COVID-19 cases in the region, we cannot risk further spread during the holidays. It is first and foremost important that each person remains safe and looks forward to a better year in 2021.

We are excited that aspects of the event will remain, including virtual tree lightings, some merchants and attractions open with possible extended hours; wreath decorating contest and we encourage everyone to participate to capture and grow the Christmas spirit during the holiday season. Take that box from the attic or those lights from the basement and make it happen both at home and your place of business; not only for those in the downtown area but all across Greeneville and Greene County let’s make this the most festive year ever. Christmas is not canceled but it being severely modified so please do your part by helping to light up and deck out our community. Happy Holidays!
